Department of Molecular Biology

The Department of Molecular Biology was started in the year 2008. It is the only facility in Kerala for Postgraduate studies in Molecular Biology and is one of the very few institutions in India. The Department offers PG and PhD programs in Molecular Biology. Molecular Biology is a research oriented collaborative course comprising most important and recent sciences like Genetic Engineering, Industrial Biotechnology, Microbial Technology, Genetics etc. giving the students job opportunities in various fields like teaching, research, industry, medical laboratories and more. Molecular Biology, in particular recombinant DNA research, has transformed research in the biological and medical sciences. The curriculum is designed for the students to conduct projects and to associate with other research institutions. Our students have done their projects at Indian Institute of Science-Bangalore, Central Food Technological Research Institute-Mysore, Institute of Biotechnology & Bioinformatics-Bangalore, Central Plantation Crops Research Institute-Kasaragod, Indian Institute of Spices Research-Kozhikode, Regional Cancer Centre-Thiruvananthapuram, Malabar Cancer Centre-Thalassery etc. Such exposure in National Laboratories and research centres helps the students to gain employment at different establishments. The syllabus is constructed in such a way that the students can clear CSIR-UGC JRF National Eligibility test. The current research is in the area of proteins and peptides-structure and activity relationships.
